How It Works
The anion gap is calculated as Na - (Cl + HCO3) with a normal range of 8-12 mEq/L. An elevated anion gap suggests metabolic acidosis from causes remembered by the mnemonic MUDPILES (Methanol, Uremia, DKA, Propylene glycol, Isoniazid/Iron, Lactic acidosis, Ethylene glycol, Salicylates). The corrected anion gap adjusts for low albumin by adding 2.5 for each g/dL below 4.0.
