How It Works
The Harris-Benedict equation calculates basal metabolic rate (BMR): Males = 66.5 + (13.75 x weight) + (5.003 x height) - (6.755 x age); Females = 655.1 + (9.563 x weight) + (1.850 x height) - (4.676 x age). Total needs = BMR x Activity Factor x Stress Factor. Hospitalized patients typically need 1.2-1.5 activity factor and additional stress factors for fever, surgery, or burns.
