How It Works

Corrected calcium adjusts for low albumin levels using the formula: Corrected Ca = Measured Ca + 0.8 x (4.0 - Albumin). About 40% of serum calcium is bound to albumin, so low albumin falsely lowers the measured total calcium. Normal corrected calcium is 8.5-10.5 mg/dL. Ionized calcium is a more direct measurement when available.
