How It Works
The Glasgow Coma Scale measures consciousness using three components: Eye opening (1-4), Verbal response (1-5), and Motor response (1-6), giving a total score from 3 to 15. Scores of 13-15 indicate mild injury, 9-12 moderate, and 3-8 severe. A GCS of 8 or below typically warrants airway protection with intubation.
