How It Works
Ideal body weight (IBW) uses the Devine formula: Males = 50 + 2.3 x (inches over 60 inches), Females = 45.5 + 2.3 x (inches over 60 inches). IBW is critical for ventilator tidal volume settings (6-8 mL/kg IBW), aminoglycoside dosing, and nutrition goals. When actual weight exceeds 120% of IBW, adjusted body weight (IBW + 0.4 x excess) may be used for certain drugs.
